CranioSacral Therapy was originally developed in the early 1900’s by William Sutherland, an osteopath who explored the interrelationships between cranial motion and subsequent physiological and psychological changes.
By the 1930’s, Dr. Sutherland had clear methods for gently manipulating the craniofacial system to address various musculoskeletal symptoms, a practice later named Cranial Osteopathy.
In the 1970’s, Dr. John Upledger, after years of clinical experience and scientific research, expanded upon the work of Sutherland and Cranial Osteopathy to form CranioSacral Therapy. He has since then established the Upledger Institute and written a number of textbooks on the subject.
Other practitioners, such as Hugh Milne and Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral, have contributed to the field in significant ways, and CranioSacral Therapy continues to evolve.
